Def Con 18 (the computer hackers conference) recently held their annual convention in Las Vegas and this was their final year at the Riviera. I guess they decided to go out with a bang before heading to the Rio next year, and they issued a seven key "puzzle" set to commemorate the event. There are small "links" between each of the keys. I made a quick trip to the Chumash Casino yesterday. It turns out that rumors that they are using a new room key are not true. They continue to use the green key and, according to two different staff members, they have not issued any special event keys or any other room keys.

The rumor could be based upon confusion relating to Hotel Corque. Hotel Corque is located in Solvang, CA, is also owned by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians and often appears in Chumash Casino advertising materials.

I have to admit that I hadn't heard anything about Frederick's of Hollywood for decades, so when this Hard Rock Las Vegas key appeared, I was more than a little surprised.

According to a May 11, 2010, story in the Las Vegas Sun...

"Frederick's of Hollywood Group Inc. and the Hard Rock said they will "actively promote the young and sexy lifestyle they represent" and that the deal includes a retail presence throughout the Hard Rock. Promotions will involve social networking and events at the hotel's clubs and pools."

Hopefully this is just the start of many more Frederick's keys from the HR.

Prestige at the Palazzo

Palazzo Adam Key

Above is an image of the Adam key from the Palazzo. I've heard that it's possible as few as 100 of these keys were produced (but I have absolutely no idea if this figure is accurate). I've heard that the key was produced for the bar mitzvah of Sheldon Adelson's son Adam (and while I've read a recent news story that mentions Adelson having a son named Adam and that they recently celebrated his bar mitzvah, the story mentioned that it was celebrated at the David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem). Any information about this key would be greatly appreciated.

Indian National Finals Rodeo

I really like this room key produced for the 34th Annual Indian National Finals Rodeo held at the South Point Equestrian Center, November 11th through 14th. The addition of a "poster" image on the back is a great touch.

Prima - MGM Grand Privilege Program

MGM Grand now has a Guest Privilege Program...and it's not cheap. You have to post $500 to your room account at check in (and if I understand the information correctly, this does not include the cost of your room). Your purchases at any participating restaurant, lounge, nightclub, spa, retail outlet, pool, etc. are deducted from this prepayment. It doesn't look like I'll ever be a Prima guest since I spend way too much time running around trying to get keys to ever spend $500 on food, etc. (that's a LOT of Starbucks coffee).

Your name and dates of your stay are printed on the key, similar to the light type of printing used for slot club cards. The names/dates have been digitally removed from the picture above. Also, the card appears "dusty" in the scan above but actually it's glitter in the card that makes it sparkle when the light hits it. It's a pretty classy looking key.

A Night at Aria

Less than 24 hours spent at Aria were at times frustrating, infuriating, exhilarating and astonishing. Given that the casino/resort opened on December 16th, staying there only five days after the opening may have been foolish, but I wanted to check things out when they were pretty much brand new.

As I was already in Las Vegas prior to the night at Aria, I arrived at Crystals (the retail district at City Center) without any luggage via free shuttle...well, it's actually a new Suburban...from MGM Grand. It was a fun ride and the driver described various areas along the route including The Mansion at MGM Grand, etc. Once at Crystals, not being much of a shopper, I quickly made my way over to Aria.

The registration desk at Aria had several employees eagerly waiting to check in guests. The young lady that handled my check-in was very friendly and provided me with a room on the 14th floor (I had reserved the lowest level room available - the deluxe room). I was given a couple of the RFID keys and went off my room.

Upon arriving at my room, I found a housekeeping cart near the door and the door was slightly open. I knocked on the door and then opened it. One employee was sitting by the window, reading the complimentary magazine and joking around with two other employees in the room. I said that I was checked into this room. One of the housekeepers said that it would be five minutes before the room would be ready. I said I would wait down the hall by the windows.

About 10 minutes later, they said the room was ready for me and I proceeded down the hall to make my grand entrance into one of the new technologically advanced rooms. Keep in mind that with the RFID keys, you no longer insert the key into a slot - you tap it on a pad on the door and it unlocks.

I entered the room to find that it was beautifully decorated and looked very comfortable. I tried to turn on a light...nothing. I tried to close the privacy screen/curtain...nothing (it's electronically powered, you just can't pull on it...darn). I tried to make the room a little cooler by adjusting the a/c...it wouldn't change. At least the water was running in the bathroom so I could wash my face to cool off a little and then I was on the phone to the front desk. "Maybe I just don't understand all of this new technology stuff, but I can't get anything in the room to work" -- yes, I felt foolish saying it, but it was true. The woman on the phone asked if the TV came on when I entered the room. "No"..."well that's your problem". She said that someone would be up to fix it as soon as possible. After about 20 minutes of waiting, the room wasn't the only thing that seemed to be getting hotter and hotter by the minute. I headed back to the front desk.

The nice young lady that checked me in was there and I said that it had nothing to do with her, but I needed to speak to a manager. She phoned for a manager...and it turned out that the people standing next to me at the front desk were also waiting for a manager. About 20 minutes passed before two managers arrived - one for each of us that was waiting lol.

I explained the problem with the room, the unprofessional behavior of the housekeeping staff in my room (naturally I had to throw in a comment about how valuable it is to even HAVE a job in Las Vegas right now so new hire housekeepers should spend more time working and less time reading and joking around), and so on. The manager was very nice, and provided me with another room which was upgraded to a Deluxe Room with a City View (a $50 upgrade) on the 35th floor. She asked which room I was in originally - "Oh, there's the problem, we aren't supposed to be checking anyone into the 14th floor right now - we're having technical problems with that floor". She proceeded to make my keys...nothing. She tried again...nothing. The key encoding system was completely down. She apologized for the problems and said it would be 20 minutes until I could get my keys and offered to have security take me to my room, but since I didn't have any luggage with me at the time, I said I would simply come back to the desk in 20 minutes and pick up my keys.

Hmmmmm...what's the best way to spend 20 minutes in a casino? Yep, gambling. I have to admit I'm not much of a gambler so I popped $20 into a "Invaders from the Planet Moolah" slot machine and started to play. The machine is normally very entertaining but this particular machine decided to go nuts, giving me LOTS of bonus rounds. Next thing you know, about a half hour has passed and I'm cashing out the machine for $446.25. Now I'm in a very good mood - go figure.

I head back to the front desk, show my ID and ask for my keys. Again they were very apologetic about the problems and proceeded to make my keys...or not. Tried again...nope. Went to another computer and finally they were able to make my keys. They gave me a $50 credit against my bill for all of the problems with the keys.

I made my way up to my room, tapped the key on the pad on the door and the door unlocked. As I entered the room, the curtains opened, the lights went from dim to full bright, and the TV turned on with a display of items you can control in the room. The room was magnificent with a wonderful view. I can only imagine what the Sky Suites are like. Virtually everything in the room can be controlled via the TV remote control -- you can turn on/off all of the lights individually or as a group, you can open/close the blackout curtains and screen curtain. You can adjust room temperature. Oh, yeah, you can control the TV and listen to radio channels as well.

All in all, it's easily one of the best rooms I've ever stayed in anywhere. It was not only beautiful but comfortable. I'm pretty picky when it comes to the lighting in a room and this room had more than enough lighting. While the shower may be designed to conserve water, you wouldn't know it by the velocity of the water (note to South Point - ditch those horrible showerheads). I tried room service and it was quick and the food was delicious...and even somewhat fancy considering that I ordered pretty much basic "grub".

I can't wait until I get the chance to stay there again someday...once they've worked out all of the bugs.

My Pup Rio

While I was away in Las Vegas, my pup Rio passed away on Wednesday, 12/23. She was the most wonderful, sweetest pup ever. I can still remember when she was small enough to walk under the side rails on the kitchen chairs. Debby said it perfectly in her blog posting, so I'm just posting a link to that here...

My Pre-Christmas Trip to Las Vegas (Part 1)

A very nice part of my trip to Las Vegas was spending one night at Aria - the new casino/hotel at City Center. While there's a long story associated with my stay, I'm still tired from my trip so for now I'm just uploading a scan of the keys being used at Aria and Vdara. I wasn't able to obtain the Aria SkySuites key (I didn't even SEE the key, but was told about it), I did get these.

You'll notice from the drawings on the back that these keys are not inserted into a slot on the lock. Instead, these use RFID technology -- you simply press the key against a "plate" on the door, it senses the key, and the door unlocks. Once you enter the room, all kinds of things happen (curtains open, lights go on, TV turns on, etc.) All of the technology revolves around the TV and the remote, or a LCD control panel next to the bed. Cool stuff that I'll describe in better detail later.

Will there be a new PH Peepshow key in January?

News of Michael Jackson's death broke during this same timeframe and at this same auction, several items of his memorabilia were put on the auction block. I'm much happier with the image of Marilyn on this key than I would have been if it had a picture of Michael.

I'll admit that when it comes to room keys, I'm more than a little partial toward keys from the Venetian. I really like this key in particular -- the coloring is great, I like the landmarks in the "shadows" in the background, and the "Viva Las Vegas" wording is just icing on the cake.

TI large Mystere key variations

It's always interesting how many subtle variations of a key may exist. At first glance, the three keys seem very similar...then the obvious difference on the top key not having arrows catches your eye. Flip them over and you realize that the mag stripe is on oppostie sides of the wording on the bottom keys. I can't wait to get to the TI section of the illustrated guide to show some of the Social House and Spa variations (and to find out about more that are out there that others have found).

Spa Resort Casino

Things didn't turn out as planned (what else is new?) and I only made it to Chumash and Tachi Palace - the two casinos closest to home. Keys like these from the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs remind me that I really need to make the trips this year.

Recent Venetian/Palazzo Convention Keys

PH - Innovation Takes Root

At first this looks like the basic PH black key with a convention imprint. It turns out that the Innovation Takes Root conference held in September was to discuss bioplastics. Bioplastics do not use fossil fuel sources such as petroleum. This card is made with Ingeo natural plastic. This key was certainly an interesting find.

Flamingo Total Rewards Donny & Marie Room Key

After noticing one of these Total Rewards Gold Donny & Marie room keys (yep, room keys, read on) - slot club cards on eBay earlier this evening, I thought I'd post the story of how I added one of these to my collection during my trip to Las Vegas in November.

During a typical trip to the hotel registration counter at the Flamingo, I asked for some room keys and was given one of these in addition to the "usual" Flamingo Donny & Marie key (and an older key as well). The guy at the desk said they were using these slot cards as room keys. Naturally, I headed directly to the Total Rewards desk for more info. and hopefully more cards.

A very helpful employee at the Total Rewards desk said that not only was he unable to give me any of the TR Gold Donny & Marie cards, they didn't have any at the TR counter and he wasn't sure they were ever going to get them. He went on to explain that when guests checked in at the hotel, they were given the gold TR card and it was swiped into the system as a room key. They were then told to take it over to the TR desk to have it set up for use as a slot card as well.

Naturally any of this is subject to change without notice as is typcial with just about anything at any of the casinos :)

PH - Keith Barry Variations

Be on the lookout (I've always wanted to say that - guess I've watched too many police dramas on TV) for two different variations of the Keith Barry Hypnomagician key from Planet Hollywood. While there are some slight variations on the front, you can easily see the difference on the back.

It's always fun to find this kind of difference. At first glance you're sure you already have the key...and then you're saying to yourself "wait a second...I don't."

Seminole Hard Rock Casino 1st Anniversary

As an interesting follow-up to the previous key I mentioned here, I finally found a key I've been trying to locate. The Seminole Hard Rock Casino "Celebrate Our 1st Anniversary in Style!" key pictured below lists first anniversary dates of March 11, 2005 for the Tampa location and May 11, 2005 for the Hollywood location. It's always great to see chips pictured on a room key.

Floyd's Delicious Nightlife - Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa, FL

If you're looking for a bright key to add to your collection, this might be the one. The scan doesn't do it justice. This key really stands out in a group...then again, when it comes to keys from the various Hard Rock casinos, I don't expect them to be subtle.

Binder page "lifters"

I'm not sure why I didn't check this out when I was buying pages from Costco (still a great deal) but they also offer in their online business section Avery "Triangle Sheet Lifters" -- these things are fantastic as they are large and work very well with card pages. The smaller ones (not triangular and much more narrow) can sometimes "catch" the pages. At $1.11 each including s&h, I'm ordering more for all of the binders I have that need larger page lifters.

Caesars and MasterCard must have realized that you can never go wrong by designing a key with the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign as a key element.

Considering that the design of the sign was never copyrighted, I'm surprised we haven't seen it on a LOT more keys.

The Signature at MGM Grand VIP

It's interesting that The Signature at MGM Grand chose to use a different typestyle for the VIP lettering than that used by the MGM Grand.

The rest of the key is very similar to the usual MGM Grand VIP keys.

Rio Pure Romance - Simply the Best

It seems a few people haven't noticed this Venetian key variation yet. In addition to the wording differences at the bottom on the front, the print on the back also has some differences (otherwise the fronts are the same, even though the scan doesn't make it look that way due to difficulties scanning reflective foil surfaces).

Binder Pages for Room Keys

I'm not sure where the rest of you are getting binder pages for your room keys (or what pages you're using), but my supply of pages left over from the good old phonecard days are starting to run out and I thought I'd check around to see what's available. The Avery business card pages seem good (and popular with collectors from what I've seen).

A little searching turned up the pages at Costco.com at $1.53 for a package of 10 pages (with free shipping) plus tax. Seems like a pretty good deal for Costco members.

Here are three variations of the PH David Spade key -- Feb 15 & 16, 2008 -- March 14 & 15, 2008 -- and April 11 & 12 (click on the image for a clearer picture). Are there others out there? If you've seen another variety, please let me know. The three keys have a common back with the (I) manufacturers mark.

Tachi Palace, Lemoore, CA

Made a quick trip to the Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, Calif. today. Some road construction made the trip a little longer than planned, but picking up the room key pictured above (and a stop at Starbucks in Kettleman City) made the trip a success.

Have you noticed that (at least) two variations of the Stomp Out Loud key exist? Not only is the coloring on the front of the key slightly different, but the backs are different as well.

That's right - freedom...or more precisely, the luxury of having free time. One more week of insane amounts of work and it's over. I'll finally have some time to spend chasing casino room keys and working on the guide.
